How it all began

Matthew Dutton (Bigg Dutt to his friends) has always loved a meal right off “the ‘ole barbeque.” One fateful day, he came home with a beautiful rack of ribs. As he was prepping the ribs for the grill, he realized that he had forgotten to buy barbecue sauce. Instead of returning to the store, Bigg Dutt decided to make his own sauce. He knew about basic ingredients—ketchup, mustard, sugar, and some spices. So, armed with minimal knowledge and a bottle of hamburger seasoning, Bigg Dutt concocted his first batch of barbecue sauce.

Good, but not perfect. Thus started an ten-year obsession to create the best barbecue sauce known to man. Bigg Dutt took “trial and error” to new levels.

Over time, he tweaked the recipe from processed foods like ketchup to breaking the ingredients down into pure singular parts Teaspoons, tablespoons, and quarts were converted into ounces. Unique ingredients were added, tasted, then retained, or deleted. Batch after batch either made it into a bottle or was poured right down the drain. Then he started over. And over again. Neighbors, friends, and relatives became his taste testers—for he was creating his barbeque sauce for “everyman” not professional tasters. Bigg Dutt used the feedback he received in the development of the next round of bottled samples. Through this effort, he actually built up a cult following consisting of people ranging from young to old, from construction workers to doctors, all united in their love for the taste of Bigg Dutt’s concoctions.

Finally, after more than 150 batches, Bigg Dutt’s exclaimed, “That’s it!”

Now, the Bigg Dutt’s Barbecue Sauce line consists of the Spicy Original and the recently perfected Smoke Pit Sauce. And there is more to come, including dry rubs and salad dressings. Ah, but that’s another story.
